Con amargura, me doy cuenta que de un día para el otro en Ubuntu Jaunty 9.10 perdí el audio.
Me pongo a investigar que puede ocurrir, y con el alsamixer no daba pie con bola. Por un momento me asuste, pero luego agarre una consola:

Realmente funciona, todos los archivos dentro de /etc/modprobe.d/ deben terminar con _.conf_.
Me sirvió a mi, a ustedes también les puede pasar.
Luego de hacer los cambios correspondientes, el _reload_ a _alsa_ alcanza y sobra.
